Update Insurance After Divorce Singapore: Beneficiaries, DPS, and Health Coverage
Divorce Doesn't Touch Your Insurance Nominations
Just like wills and CPF nominations, your insurance beneficiary designations survive divorce in Singapore. If your ex-spouse is named as the beneficiary on your life insurance policies, they remain the legal recipient of the payout until you actively change it. No insurer will update this automatically based on your divorce.
The process for changing beneficiaries depends on the type of nomination on your policy — and one type can't be changed without your ex-spouse's cooperation.
Trust Nominations (Section 49L): The One You Might Be Stuck With
A trust nomination under Section 49L of the Insurance Act creates an irrevocable trust in favour of a spouse and/or children. Once executed:
- The policy benefits belong to the nominees, not the policyholder
- The policyholder loses all rights to the policy's cash value, surrender value, and death benefit
- The nomination cannot be revoked without the written consent of every named nominee (or their legal guardian, if they're minors)
After divorce, if your ex-spouse was a nominee and refuses to provide written consent, the trust remains active. You can't unilaterally undo it. Your options are limited to:
- Negotiating consent as part of a broader settlement
- Accepting that the trust stands and adjusting your other estate planning accordingly
If you have children named alongside your ex-spouse in the trust nomination, the children's share remains protected regardless of the divorce.
Revocable Nominations (Section 49M): Change Anytime
A revocable nomination under Section 49M gives you full control. You can update or revoke the beneficiary at any time without anyone's consent.
To revoke a revocable nomination:
- Obtain Form 5 (Revocation of Nomination) from your insurer or download it from their website
- Complete the form as directed by the insurer
- Sign it in the presence of two independent witnesses — both must be at least 21 years old and cannot be nominees or the spouses of nominees
- Submit the signed form to your insurer
For a new beneficiary nomination, follow the insurer's current nomination procedure. Keep a copy of any submitted form with the insurer's confirmation of receipt.

Dependants' Protection Scheme (DPS)
DPS is a term life insurance scheme for CPF members that covers death or total permanent disability. Its nomination process is separate from private policy nominations.
If you nominated your ex-spouse as the DPS beneficiary, submit the physical Form 4 revocable nomination to Great Eastern.
If you're no longer insured under DPS and want to reinstate coverage post-divorce, check your eligibility on the CPF website. Coverage ends if you previously opted out or if premiums weren't deducted for an extended period.
Health Insurance After Divorce
MediShield Life: This is tied to your CPF account and continues regardless of marital status. No changes needed.
Integrated Shield Plans (ISPs): If you and your ex-spouse were on the same ISP rider or family plan, contact your insurer to separate coverage. You may need to apply for your own plan — don't let your coverage lapse during the transition, as re-entry may involve new underwriting, exclusions for pre-existing conditions, or higher premiums.
Corporate medical plans: If you were covered under your ex-spouse's employer medical plan as a dependant, that coverage typically ends upon divorce. Check with their HR department or the insurer for the exact termination date, and arrange your own coverage before it lapses. If you're employed, confirm whether your own employer plan covers you as a single employee or if you need to update your employee records.
Rider coverage for children: If your children were covered under riders on your ex-spouse's policies, confirm who retains the rider after divorce. The parent with care and control often continues the coverage, but this isn't automatic — it should be specified in the court order or agreed between parties.
Review Everything in One Pass
Insurance is easy to overlook because you don't think about it until you need it. After divorce, review every active policy:
- Life insurance (term and whole life)
- Critical illness coverage
- Personal accident insurance
- DPS and MediShield Life
- Health/ISP riders for you and your children
- Mortgage protection policies tied to your home loan
For each one, check the beneficiary designation and the coverage terms.
