Change Name on Passport After Divorce UK: Documents, Cost and Timeline

Change Name on Passport After Divorce UK: Documents, Cost and Timeline

Reverting your passport to your maiden name after divorce is straightforward — but the document requirements are strict, and getting the timing wrong can strand you at an airport gate.

What Documents You Need

HM Passport Office requires three original documents (photocopies are not accepted):

  1. Your current passport (in your married name)
  2. Your extract decree of divorce (Scotland) or decree absolute/final order (England and Wales)
  3. Your original birth certificate showing your maiden name

Your marriage certificate isn't technically required for the passport application itself, but keep it with your document pack — some supporting processes (like bank updates afterwards) will ask for it.

If you can't locate your extract decree, order a replacement from ScotlandsPeople (for divorces after May 1984) or contact the court that issued it directly.

Online vs Paper Application

Online (recommended): Apply through GOV.UK. You'll upload a new photo and be prompted to post your supporting documents to a processing centre. Currently the faster route — typically 3-6 weeks.

Paper (D1 form): Available from Post Office branches. You'll post everything together. Processing takes 6-10 weeks on average.

Both routes cost the standard passport renewal fee. You're applying for a new 10-year passport, not amending the existing one.

The Travel Booking Trap

This is where people get caught: you book a flight under your maiden name, expecting the passport to arrive before departure. It doesn't. The airline won't let you board because the name on your booking doesn't match the name on your passport.

Rules to follow:

  • Book all travel in your current legal name (the one on your physical passport right now)
  • Only book under your maiden name once the new passport is physically in your hands
  • If you have imminent travel, wait until after the trip to apply

Similarly, don't change your bank details or driving licence to your maiden name before the passport arrives — you may need your current-name ID for verification during the passport application process.

Processing Your Driving Licence at the Same Time

While your passport application is being processed, you can simultaneously submit your DVLA name change. The DVLA requires:

  • Completed D1 form (from Post Offices or ordered online)
  • Your current photocard driving licence
  • The original extract decree of divorce (DVLA does not accept certified copies)

Post everything to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BN. The name change is free unless your photocard was lost. Processing takes 2-3 weeks.

Don't forget the V5C: If you own a vehicle, update Section 6 of your V5C log book separately. Send the updated V5C with a cover letter and a photocopy (not original) of your extract decree to the DVLA Vehicle Department. Failure to update carries a fine of up to £1,070.

After the Passport Arrives

With your new passport in hand, you can update everything else: banks, HMRC, employer payroll, pension providers, GP surgery, and utilities. Most institutions accept the passport as primary evidence of your new name — you rarely need to show the extract decree again once photo ID is updated.

The Scotland After-Divorce Checklist provides the full agency-by-agency sequence, ensuring you update institutions in the right order to avoid access freezes or verification failures.
