How to Update Social Security and Your Driver's License After Divorce in Colorado

The SSA and DMV updates have to happen in a specific order — and getting it wrong is the single most common reason Colorado residents get turned away at the DMV after a divorce. The Colorado DMV checks names against the Social Security Administration's SSOLV database in real time. If your SSA record still shows your married name, the DMV will reject your application on the spot.

Update Social Security First

Visit a local SSA office in person. You cannot complete a divorce-related name change online.

What to bring:

• Form SS-5 (Application for a Social Security Card) — available at ssa.gov or at the office
• Certified copy of your Decree of Dissolution (JDF 1116) or your court order for name restoration (JDF 1825). Must be an original with the court seal — photocopies are rejected.
• Unexpired government-issued photo ID (current driver's license or passport)
• Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence (birth certificate or passport)

The SSA does not charge a fee for updating your Social Security card. Processing takes 24 to 48 hours for the SSOLV database to sync. Your new physical card arrives by mail in 10 to 14 business days, but you do not need to wait for the card — the database update is what matters for the DMV.

Wait 48 Hours, Then Visit the Colorado DMV

Colorado law requires you to update your driver's license within 30 days of a legal name change. Schedule an in-person appointment at a State Driver's License Office (not a county motor vehicle office — those handle titles and registrations, not driver's licenses).

Select the "Driver License Renewal" appointment type even though you are changing your name.

What to bring:

• Certified decree (JDF 1116) or name-restoration order (JDF 1825)
• Your updated Social Security card, or if it hasn't arrived yet, the receipt from your SSA visit (the DMV checks the database directly)
• Current Secure and Verifiable ID
• Proof of physical address if your address has changed

You will need a new photo and fingerprint scan. The fee is the standard renewal rate ($7.20–$8.20 depending on credential type).

Why the Order Matters

The DMV appointment will fail if you visit before the SSA processes your change. The SSOLV database query happens at the counter — if the names don't match, you are sent home. This is the mistake that sends thousands of people back to the DMV for a second appointment.

What Else Needs Updating?
