Update Your Passport After Divorce in Australia

If you are changing your name after divorce, your passport needs to match your updated identity — and there is a way to do it without paying the full A$422 renewal fee that most people assume is unavoidable.

The Free Replacement Policy Most People Miss

The Australian Passport Office has a gratis replacement policy for name changes due to a change in relationship status. If your current passport has more than two years of validity remaining, you can get a replacement passport with your updated name at no cost.

The catch: the replacement passport keeps the same expiry date as the one it replaces. If your current passport expires in November 2029, your new passport with your post-divorce name also expires in November 2029. You are not getting a fresh 10-year passport — just the same validity period with the correct name.

This is still a significant saving. If your passport has three or four years left, applying for the free replacement now and then paying for a full renewal when it eventually expires saves you A$422 today.

When You Must Pay Full Price

If your passport has less than two years of validity remaining, the gratis replacement is not available. You must apply for a standard 10-year adult passport at the full fee of A$422.

Priority processing is available for an additional A$308 if you need the passport urgently, but standard processing takes 4-6 weeks — plan ahead if you have travel booked.

What You Need to Apply

Whether you are using the free replacement or paying for a full renewal, the application process is the same:

Documents Required

1. Form PC8 (Application for an Australian Passport) — available from Australia Post or the APO website
2. Your current passport (to be surrendered)
3. Original Australian birth certificate (not a commemorative certificate)
4. Official marriage certificate (issued by a state or territory BDM registry)
5. FCFCOA divorce order (downloaded from the Commonwealth Courts Portal with the electronic seal)
6. Two passport-sized photographs (45mm x 35mm, taken within the last 6 months)
7. A guarantor who has known you for at least 12 months and holds a valid Australian passport

Where to Lodge

Submit your application at a participating Australia Post outlet. You must attend in person — online-only applications are not available for name-change passports. The postal clerk verifies your identity documents and photographs, then forwards the application to the APO.

The Sequencing Rule

Update your passport after your driver licence. Your updated photo ID makes the passport application smoother because Australia Post and the APO use it to verify your identity chain.

The recommended order is:

1. ACT driver licence (or your state/territory equivalent) — update first as primary photo ID
2. Medicare and ATO records — via myGov
3. Passport — once you have updated photo ID to present at Australia Post

Do not book international travel in your new name until your new passport is in hand. Airlines will not board you if the name on your ticket does not match the name on your passport, and processing delays happen.

Travel During the Transition

If you have existing travel booked under your married name and your passport still shows that name, travel on the current passport. You can update after you return. The passport is valid regardless of your legal name change — what matters is that your ticket name matches your passport name.

If you have already started the passport replacement process, Australia Post can provide a receipt confirming your application is in progress, but this is not a travel document.
