Update Driver Licence After Divorce Victoria
The 14-Day Window
Victorian law requires you to notify VicRoads of a name change within 14 days. This isn't a guideline — it's a legal obligation under the road safety regulations. Once your divorce order is final and you've decided to revert to your maiden name (or adopted a new legal name through BDM Victoria), VicRoads should be one of your first stops.
What You Need
Visit a VicRoads hub or service centre with:
- Completed Form C4 (Change of Personal Details) — available at any VicRoads location or from their website
- Your identity chain documents (originals, not copies):
- Birth certificate (BDM-issued, not a commemorative version)
- Marriage certificate (BDM-issued, not the ceremonial certificate signed on your wedding day)
- Divorce order (the digital order downloaded from the Commonwealth Courts Portal)
If VicRoads has previously recorded both your married and maiden names — for example, if you changed your name on your licence when you married — the update can sometimes be processed without the full identity chain. But bring the documents anyway. If your maiden name isn't on file, VicRoads will need the birth certificate and marriage certificate or divorce order to establish the link between your names.
Fees
Updating your name on VicRoads records is free. However, if you want a replacement licence card showing your new name and a new photo, that costs $33.30. Most people get the replacement — your licence is one of the most frequently used identity documents, and having a mismatched name creates friction at banks, airports, and government agencies.
The new card is processed in-person and arrives by mail within about 10 business days.

Address Changes Too
If you've moved to a new address since separating, update that at the same time. VicRoads requires address changes to be reported within 14 days as well — the same window as name changes. Doing both in one visit avoids a second trip.

The most efficient order for identity updates after divorce:
- Download your divorce order from the Commonwealth Courts Portal
- BDM Victoria — register a formal name change if required (skip this step if you're simply reverting to your maiden name and your marriage was in Australia)
- VicRoads — update your driver licence within 14 days
- Australian Passport Office — apply for a free replacement if your passport has more than 2 years of validity
- Medicare, ATO, electoral roll, banks
Get VicRoads done early because the updated licence can then serve as supporting photo ID for other agencies in the list.
