Why the Driver Licence Comes First

Your Queensland driver licence is your primary photo ID. Every other agency — banks, Medicare, the ATO, your super fund — will ask for updated government-issued photo identification when you request a name change. If your licence still shows your married name while you are trying to update your bank records to your maiden name, the bank will reject the request or flag the account.

Updating the licence first creates a clean chain: every subsequent update uses the freshly issued card as proof.

Under the Transport Operations (Road Use Management—Driver Licensing) Regulation 2010 (Qld), you are legally required to notify the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) of a change of name within 14 days.

How to Update Your Name at TMR

This must be done in person. TMR does not process name changes online, by phone, or by mail. You can visit any TMR Customer Service Centre, an authorised QGAP office, or a rural police station that handles licensing transactions.

What to bring:

• Your current physical Queensland driver licence
• Evidence of Identity (EOI) documents — at least one Category A document and two Category B documents, or two Category A and one Category B
• A linking document connecting your current name to your previous name

Category A documents include a full Australian birth certificate or a current Australian passport.

Category B documents include a Medicare card, a bank statement, or an ATO assessment notice.

Linking documents for a post-divorce name reversion: your official BDM marriage certificate (establishing the married name) plus your sealed FCFCOA divorce order (establishing the end of the marriage). Together these prove the chain from your birth name to your married name and back.

Fees

There is no fee to update your name on a Queensland driver licence, provided you surrender your current card at the counter. If you cannot produce your current card (lost or stolen), a replacement card fee applies.

Your updated licence will show your reverted name and be valid for the same period as the surrendered card.

After the Licence Is Updated

With your updated driver licence in hand, move through the remaining agencies in this order:

1. Australian Passport Office — apply for a replacement passport. If your current passport has at least two years of validity remaining and the name change is due to a change in marital status, the $265 replacement fee is waived.
2. Medicare — complete Form MS011 to separate your Medicare card and update your name.
3. ATO via myGov — update your name and marital status.
4. Banks and super funds — present your updated licence as primary photo ID.
5. Electoral roll, car registration, insurance, and utilities — each of these will also accept your updated licence as proof.

Common Issues

You cannot find your marriage certificate. You can order a replacement from the Queensland BDM (or from the BDM in whichever state the marriage was registered). Processing takes approximately 10 business days. TMR will not accept a wedding certificate or a church-issued document — it must be the official registry certificate.

Your divorce order is not yet final. The order becomes final one month and one day after the court hearing date. Until then, it is not valid as a linking document. If you need to update your licence before the order is final — for example, because you need an updated address after moving — you can update the address separately (also free, also in person) while waiting for the order to finalise.

You were born interstate. Your birth certificate from another state is still a valid Category A document at TMR. You do not need a Queensland-issued birth certificate.
