Civil Divorce: Two Types of Court Documents

After a civil divorce in the Family Justice Courts, there are two key documents you'll need: the Certificate of Final Judgment (which legally dissolves your marriage) and the Order of Court for ancillary matters (which details the arrangements for custody, maintenance, and asset division). Both may be needed at different stages of your post-divorce admin.

Authentic Court Order (ACO) — Free, Digital

The fastest way to get your divorce documents is through the Authentic Court Order system. Log into the Judiciary's e-Service with your Singpass, and you can download a digitally verifiable version of your court orders at no charge.

The ACO is digitally verifiable; whether it is accepted depends on the recipient's requirements. It carries a digital verification seal that recipients can check through the Judiciary's portal — no need for physical stamps or certification marks where a digital order is accepted.

Certified True Copy (CTC) — For Institutions That Insist on Paper

Some institutions — particularly overseas authorities, certain embassies, and some banks — require a physical Certified True Copy rather than a digital ACO. To get one:

1. Request it through the eLitigation Service Bureau or visit the Family Justice Courts Service Bureau in person
2. Specify which court order(s) you need certified
3. Pay the certification fee (fees are set out in the Third Schedule of the Family Justice (General) Rules 2024)
4. Follow the Service Bureau's instructions for collection or delivery

Order multiple CTCs upfront. You'll likely need them for HDB, CPF Board, banks, and potentially overseas authorities if you hold foreign property or accounts.

Muslim Divorce: Sijil Cerai and Court Decree

For Muslim divorces through the Syariah Court, the primary document is the Sijil Cerai (Certificate of Divorce), issued after the divorce is formally registered. You'll also need copies of the Syariah Court's formal Decree and any orders relating to custody, nafkah iddah, mutaah, and matrimonial property.

Collecting your Sijil Cerai:

• The Syariah Court issues the Sijil Cerai after the divorce registration is complete
• Both parties receive a copy
• If you need additional certified copies, apply at the Syariah Court counter or through their online services

Important for enforcement: If you need to enforce a Syariah Court order (for maintenance, custody, or access), you'll file the enforcement application in the civil Family Justice Courts — not the Syariah Court. The Syariah Court's order serves as the basis, but enforcement goes through the civil track. Keep certified copies of the Syariah Court Decree specifically for this purpose.

Interim Judgment Is Not a Divorce Certificate

If you only have an Interim Judgment, your marriage is not legally dissolved yet. The Interim Judgment confirms the grounds for divorce but doesn't end the marriage. You still need the Certificate of Final Judgment (issued after the three-month statutory waiting period) to be considered legally divorced.

For these post-divorce administrative steps, use the Final Judgment or the Sijil Cerai as applicable; an Interim Judgment is not the final divorce document.

How Many Copies Do You Need?

Get at least three certified physical copies (or save multiple PDF versions of the ACO). Here's where you'll need them:
