How to Get a Certified Copy of Your Divorce Order in Tasmania

Your divorce order is the document that unlocks nearly every post-divorce administrative task — name changes, property transfers, passport updates, and super splitting all require a copy. But the version sitting on the Commonwealth Courts Portal may not be enough for every agency.

Downloading From the Commonwealth Courts Portal

Your FCFCOA divorce order becomes final one month and one day after the court grants it (unless the Court makes a special order). The digital order becomes available on the Commonwealth Courts Portal the day after it is finalised.

Log in to the portal using the same credentials you used to file the divorce application. Navigate to your case and download the divorce order as a PDF. Save multiple copies — you'll need this document repeatedly over the coming months.

The downloaded PDF is the official digital version. Some government agencies and financial institutions accept it, but check each organisation's requirements because some state offices require a physical certified copy.

When You Need a Certified Copy

Some organisations require a certified paper copy rather than the official digital order — particularly for property transfers, Binding Financial Agreements, and State Revenue Office stamp duty exemptions. Check with the organisation before arranging certification.

Property conveyancers working with the Land Titles Office frequently require certified copies. Banks processing mortgage refinancing may also insist on one.

How to Create a Certified Paper Copy

The FCFCOA provides the official digital Divorce Order through the Commonwealth Courts Portal at no cost. Print the PDF and take it to an authorised certifying witness — such as a Justice of the Peace, Commissioner for Declarations, or legal practitioner — to compare and certify the copy as a true copy of the digital original.

Ask the organisation receiving it whether it accepts a witness-certified printout or requires the official digital order. The Court's digital order has an electronic seal and signature, and some agencies do not require a separately certified paper copy.

What the Divorce Order Doesn't Do

The divorce order terminates your marriage. It does not divide property, split superannuation, change your name, or allocate custody. If your consent orders or BFA are separate documents (which they usually are), you'll need certified copies of those as well for property transfers and super splits.
