Who to Notify and in What Order
There is a practical sequence that avoids complications. Update government identification first, because most other institutions require updated ID before they will process a name change.
1. Tasmanian driver's licence. Visit a Service Tasmania shop with your Divorce Order, marriage certificate, and current licence. The name change is processed on the spot.
2. Medicare. Call Medicare or visit a Services Australia office with your Divorce Order and marriage certificate. Update your name on your Medicare card and any linked records.
3. Australian passport. Submit a renewal application to the Australian Passport Office with your Divorce Order and marriage certificate. If your current passport has more than two years of validity remaining, you will need to pay for a new one.
4. Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Update your name via myGov or by calling the ATO directly. You will need your Tax File Number and supporting documents.
5. Banks and financial institutions. Visit your branch or submit documents online. Most banks accept the Divorce Order and marriage certificate as sufficient proof. Update joint accounts, credit cards, loans, and superannuation records.
6. Electoral roll. Update your details with the Australian Electoral Commission online at aec.gov.au.
7. Employer and payroll. Notify your employer to update tax and superannuation records.
8. Utilities, insurance, and subscriptions. Work through your regular bills — electricity, internet, car insurance, health insurance, phone plan — and update each account.
When You Need a Formal Change of Name
A formal change-of-name application through the Tasmanian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages is only required if you want to adopt a name you have never legally held — for example, a completely new surname rather than reverting to your maiden name.
