How to Change Your Driver's License After Divorce in Kentucky

Kentucky law gives you 10 days to update your driver's license after a name or address change. Missing this deadline can result in traffic citations and complications with identity verification. The process is straightforward, but it must happen after your Social Security update — not before.

The Mandatory Sequencing: SSA Before KYTC

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet uses real-time verification against the federal Social Security database when processing credential updates. If the name on your Form SS-5 filing has not yet propagated through the SSA system, the KYTC terminal will flag a mismatch and reject your application.

Update your Social Security record first (free, usually processes in 24-48 hours), then visit a KYTC Regional Driver Licensing Office.

What You Need to Bring

Gather these documents before your visit:

• Certified copy of your divorce decree showing the name restoration provision (raised clerk's seal required)
• Current Kentucky driver's license or state ID
• Proof of Social Security number — your Social Security card, a W-2, or a 1099 showing your full SSN and new legal name
• Proof of Kentucky residency — a utility bill, bank statement, or government correspondence dated within the last six months showing your current address

If your divorce also involved an address change (for example, you moved out of the marital home), bring proof of the new address as well.

The myDrive Pre-Application

Save time by pre-applying online at myDrive.ky.gov before your office visit. The pre-application lets you enter your information in advance so the clerk can pull up your file when you arrive. You still need to visit in person for photo capture and document verification — Kentucky does not process credential updates entirely online.

Cost and Processing

The replacement credential fee is $15.00. You will receive a temporary paper credential the same day, and your permanent card arrives by mail within 10-14 business days.

If you hold a REAL ID-compliant credential and want to maintain that status, you must also provide a document meeting REAL ID requirements — typically a certified birth certificate or valid U.S. passport. Standard credentials have less stringent documentation requirements.
