Update Direct Deposit and Utilities After Divorce in Mississippi
Redirect Your Direct Deposits First
If your paycheck, Social Security benefits, VA payments, or other income was depositing into a joint bank account during the marriage, those deposits will continue flowing into the joint account until you explicitly redirect them. Every day you delay is a day your ex-spouse has access to your income.
Employer payroll: Submit a new direct deposit form to your HR department or payroll provider with your new individual bank account routing and account numbers. Most employers process the change within one to two pay cycles.
Social Security: Update your direct deposit through your my Social Security account at ssa.gov, by calling 1-800-772-1213, or by submitting Form SF-1199A at your bank. Changes typically take effect for the next scheduled payment.
VA benefits: Update through VA.gov, the VA hotline (1-800-827-1000), or your local regional office.
Retirement or pension income: Contact each plan administrator individually. For Mississippi PERS recipients, update your direct deposit through the PERS member portal or by submitting a new Direct Deposit Authorization form.
Close the joint account only after confirming all deposits and automatic payments have been successfully rerouted. An incoming deposit to a closed account will bounce back to the sender, potentially delaying your pay by days or weeks.
Transfer Utility Accounts
If you are staying in the marital home, contact each utility provider to transfer the account into your name alone:
- Electric (Entergy Mississippi, Mississippi Power, or your local cooperative)
- Water and sewer (your municipality or utility district)
- Natural gas (Atmos Energy, CenterPoint, or your local provider)
- Internet and cable
- Trash collection (if municipally billed, it may transfer with the water account)
Ask each provider which proof it requires; many may request a certified copy of the divorce decree or the recorded quitclaim deed showing property ownership, plus a valid government-issued ID.
If you are leaving the home, call to request a final meter reading on your move-out date and close your billing profile. Get confirmation in writing — you remain financially responsible for charges until the provider formally closes your account, not just until you move out.
Automatic Bill Payments
Review every automatic payment tied to the joint account or your ex-spouse's credit card:
- Mortgage or rent payments
- Insurance premiums (auto, home, health, life)
- Cell phone plan
- Streaming services, gym memberships, subscriptions
- Child-related expenses (school tuition, extracurricular fees, childcare)
Cancel automatic payments from the old joint account and set them up from your new individual account. A missed automatic payment because the source account was closed can trigger late fees, coverage lapses (for insurance), or service interruptions.
