New Mexico Parenting Classes for Divorce: Requirements by District
If you are getting divorced with children in New Mexico, you must complete a parenting education course. No exceptions. The judge will not sign your final decree without proof of completion from both parents. But the specific class, deadline, and cost depend on which judicial district handles your case.
The Statewide Requirement
All parents involved in a divorce, separation, or parentage action with minor children must complete an approved co-parenting education course. The petitioner must complete the class within 45 days of filing the petition. The respondent must complete it within 45 days of being served.
Proof of completion — typically a certificate — must be filed with the court clerk before the judge will enter a final decree.
District-Specific Programs
Second Judicial District (Bernalillo County / Albuquerque). Parents must complete the court-sponsored Co-Parenting Education Program. The "Children in Between" online course is also accepted. This is New Mexico's largest district, and the court enforces the 45-day deadline strictly.
Third Judicial District (Dona Ana County / Las Cruces). Approved online programs like "Children in Between" are accepted. Parents in the Las Cruces area can also access in-person options through local providers.
Fifth Judicial District (Chaves County / Roswell). The court requires the Parents and Children Together (PACT) class — a full Saturday session from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Chaves County Courthouse. The flat fee is $15. This is one of the few districts that still mandates an in-person, all-day format.
Eleventh Judicial District (San Juan County / Farmington) and Thirteenth Judicial District (Sandoval, Cibola, Valencia Counties). Both districts require mandatory co-parenting courses, with online options generally accepted. The completion deadline is 60 days from service of process in these districts — slightly longer than the standard 45 days.
Online Options
Most New Mexico judicial districts accept nationally recognized online courses. These programs typically cover:
- How divorce affects children at different developmental stages
- Positive communication strategies between co-parents
- Conflict reduction techniques
- Age-appropriate ways to discuss the separation with children
- The impact of parental behavior on children's adjustment
Online courses range from $25 to $60 and can usually be completed in 4-6 hours. Make sure the program you choose is specifically approved by your judicial district — not all national providers meet New Mexico's requirements.

What Happens If You Do Not Complete It
The court will not sign your final divorce decree. This means your case stays open, your Temporary Domestic Order stays in effect, and you cannot finalize any custody, support, or property division agreements.
In contested cases, failure to complete the class on time can also be raised as evidence that you are not taking the process seriously — which can influence the judge's perception of your commitment to co-parenting.
Free or Reduced-Cost Options
Some districts offer free parenting classes for pro se litigants. Additionally, if you qualified for a fee waiver on your filing costs, you may also qualify for reduced-cost or free enrollment in your district's approved program. Ask the clerk's office about available options.
