The Range Is Wide — and the Final Bill Is Hard to Predict

Solicitor fees for divorce in Wales typically run between £150 and £350 per hour, depending on the firm, the solicitor's seniority, and the complexity of the case. For an uncontested divorce with a straightforward financial settlement, total costs usually land between £1,500 and £5,000 per spouse. Contested financial remedy proceedings — where a judge decides the split — routinely cost £10,000 to £30,000 per side, and complex cases involving business valuations, international assets, or multiple pension schemes can exceed that substantially.

The unpredictability is the real problem. Solicitors bill by time, and contested cases involve correspondence, document review, court preparation, and hearings that accumulate hours. What starts as a simple instruction can escalate quickly if the other spouse is uncooperative or if disclosure reveals unexpected complications.

What the Main Options Cost

Full solicitor representation. Your solicitor handles everything — correspondence, disclosure, negotiation, drafting, and court appearances. Expect £3,000 to £10,000 for a cooperative case with moderate assets, and significantly more if it becomes contested. Most firms require an upfront retainer of £1,000 to £3,000 before work begins.

Fixed-fee divorce management. Services like Co-op Legal Services offer fixed-fee divorce applications starting around £600, but financial settlements are typically billed separately on an hourly basis (£210+ per hour). The fixed fee covers only the administrative divorce process — not the asset division, which is where most of the complexity and cost sits.

Online consent order services. If you and your spouse have already agreed how to divide everything, companies like Consent Orders Online draft the legal documents for a fixed fee of £269 to £599. Court fees are additional. The limitation: these services require you to arrive with a fully negotiated agreement. They do not help with the negotiation itself or assess whether the agreement is fair.

Mediation. A family mediator typically charges £100 to £300 per session, with most couples needing three to five sessions. The government's Family Mediation Voucher scheme provides a £500 contribution toward mediation costs. Mediation is significantly cheaper than solicitor-led negotiation, but it requires both parties to participate in good faith.

The Help with Fees scheme (Form EX160) can reduce or waive these fees if your gross monthly income is at or below £1,420 for a single applicant (with £265 allowances for a partner and each dependent child), subject to the scheme's capital rules, or if you receive qualifying benefits with earned income under £6,000 per year and meet those capital conditions.

When a Solicitor Is Worth the Cost

Complex pensions. If either spouse has a defined benefit pension — NHS, Teachers', Civil Service — the Cash Equivalent Transfer Value alone is not a reliable measure of the pension's true worth.
