Changing Social Security and Driver License After Divorce in Alabama

The Social Security Administration must be updated before any state agency. Every subsequent identity document — your driver's license, passport, vehicle title — is verified against the SSA's federal database. If you try to update ALEA before SSA has processed your change, the system flags a mismatch and the clerk rejects your application.

Visit your nearest SSA field office with a completed Form SS-5, the certified copy of your divorce decree (the one with name-restoration language or the Probate Court name-change decree), and proof of U.S. citizenship. The name change is free. SSA issues a receipt confirming the update, and the updated card is mailed separately.

The Database Sync Wait

Here is where people lose half a day. ALEA's driver license system syncs with the federal SSA database overnight. If you walk into an ALEA office the same afternoon you visited the SSA, the verification will fail because the database hasn't updated yet.

Wait at least 24 to 48 hours after SSA processes your change before going to ALEA. There's no way to speed this up — it's a batch synchronization cycle.

Updating Your Alabama Driver's License

STAR ID name changes must be processed in person at an official ALEA office. County licensing commissions cannot handle STAR ID name changes — only regular, non-STAR renewals and duplicates. If you need a STAR-compliant ID (required for domestic flights and federal facilities), you must visit an ALEA location.

Bring:

• Your updated Social Security card
• The certified copy of the divorce decree or Probate Court name-change order
• Two forms of proof of your principal residence (utility bill, bank statement, mortgage statement, or lease agreement)

The fee is $31.25 for a duplicate license or $36.25 if you combine it with a renewal. ALEA offices do not accept personal checks — bring cash, a debit card, or a money order.

What Doesn't Update Automatically

Getting the new driver's license does not update your vehicle title. That's a separate trip to the county licensing office with the new license, the decree, and the current vehicle title. If the vehicle is financed, the process is more involved — the lienholder holds the physical title and must mail it to the county office with an authorization letter on company letterhead.

Your passport is a separate federal update through the Department of State (Form DS-82 for a standard renewal, or DS-5504 if the passport was issued less than one year ago).

Bank accounts, credit cards, insurance policies, and employer records are all manual updates you initiate yourself — none of them sync with ALEA or SSA.
