Change Driver's Licence After Divorce in Saskatchewan

Updating your SGI driver's licence is the first post-divorce name change you should make — and Saskatchewan gives you exactly 15 days to do it. Under The Traffic Safety Act, you're required to report any name or address change to SGI within 15 days, with fines starting at $100 for non-compliance.

Why SGI First

Your updated SGI driver's licence becomes your primary provincial photo ID. Every subsequent name change — eHealth, Passport Canada, the CRA, your bank — relies on presenting a valid, current government photo ID. If you update your health card before your licence, eHealth may flag a mismatch between your SGI records and your health card application.

Starting with SGI creates a clean chain: Certificate of Divorce → SGI licence → eHealth → Passport → everything else.

What You Need to Bring

Visit any motor licence issuer in person. You cannot do this online — MySGI does not support name changes because staff must physically verify your original documents.

Bring:

• Your existing Saskatchewan driver's licence
• Your original Certificate of Divorce (not a photocopy — the certified original from the Court of King's Bench)
• Your birth certificate (the linking document showing your birth name)

If you're restoring your birth name, SGI uses the Certificate of Divorce as the bridge between your married name on the current licence and your birth name on your birth certificate.

Fees

• Name change only: $15 admin fee
• Name change with new photo: $30
• Address change only: $0

If you're changing both your name and address (common when moving out of the marital home), the $15 name change fee covers both updates.

What If You're Keeping Your Married Name?

If you're not changing your name, you still need to update your address within 15 days if you've moved. Address changes are free and can be done through MySGI online — only name changes require the in-person visit.

Vehicle Registration

While you're at the motor licence issuer, update the name on any vehicle registrations in your name. If vehicles are being transferred between spouses as part of the property division, bring a copy of your separation agreement — transfers between separating spouses may qualify for a sales tax exemption.
