Surname Reversion vs. Legal Name Change

Section 3(b) of the Change of Name Act, 2009 allows divorced individuals to revert to a birth name or prior surname by presenting their Divorce Order or Certificate of Divorce to Motor Registration. No application to Vital Statistics is needed for a simple reversion.
If you're changing to an entirely new name (not a prior surname), that requires a separate application through the Vital Statistics Division before you can update your licence.

- Your current driver's licence
- An original Divorce Order, Certificate of Divorce, or other official court document
- A marriage certificate if reverting from a married surname

Cost and Timeline
The fee is $25 for a new licence card ($10 for seniors aged 65 and older). Once the record is updated, the new licence/photo ID card is mailed and should take about 10 business days.
