Certified Copy of Divorce Decree Utah

Almost every post-divorce administrative task requires a certified copy of your decree — the Social Security Administration, the Driver License Division, county recorders, retirement plan administrators, and mortgage lenders all need to see a certified copy of the court-stamped decree. A photocopy or digital scan won't work.

Getting enough copies upfront saves you from making multiple trips back to the courthouse.

Where to Get Them

Certified copies are issued by the clerk of the Utah District Court that entered your decree. You can request them in person at the court clerk's office or, for many courts, through the court's online records system.

The cost is $4 per certified document plus $0.50 per page. A typical divorce decree runs 5–15 pages, so each certified copy costs roughly $6.50–$11.50.

How Many You Need

Order at least three. Here's why:

1. Social Security Administration — needed to update your SSA record if you're changing your name (they often retain the copy)
2. Utah Driver License Division — needed for a name change on your license (they verify and return)
3. Working copy — for banks, employers, and other institutions that need to see the decree

If you have real property to transfer, you'll need an additional copy for the county recorder. If you have retirement accounts to divide, the plan administrator will need one too. For complex divorces with multiple asset transfers, five copies is a safer minimum.

Some institutions will accept a copy and return the original. Others keep what you give them. Ordering extra upfront at $7–$12 each is cheaper than making a separate trip to the courthouse later.

What the Decree Looks Like

A finalized Utah divorce decree carries the judge's electronic signature and a digital time stamp on the top margin of the first page. This electronic seal is what makes the decree official — once it's applied, the divorce is immediately absolute. A certified copy from the clerk's office reproduces this seal along with the clerk's certification stamp.

Documents to Keep Long-Term

Beyond the decree itself, maintain copies of every document generated during and after the divorce:

Court documents (keep indefinitely):

• Decree of Divorce (certified copies)
• Parenting plan and custody order (if applicable)
• Property settlement agreement or stipulation
• Any post-decree modifications or enforcement orders

Financial division records (keep for at least seven years):

• QDRO or DRO for retirement account division
• Quitclaim deed (keep the conformed copy from the county recorder)
• Mortgage refinance documents
• Bank account closure confirmations
• Joint credit card closure letters

Identity update records (keep until replaced by the next update):

• SSA name change confirmation
• DLD replacement license receipt
• Passport update receipt
• Birth certificate amendment (if applicable)

Tax records (keep for at least three years after filing):

• Final joint tax returns
• W-4 change confirmations
• Any IRS correspondence about joint liabilities

Store these in a secure location — a fireproof safe, a locked drawer, or a secure digital backup. If you ever need to enforce a provision of the decree, refinance again, or prove the terms of a property division, the original documents are your evidence.

Digital vs. Physical Records

Utah courts maintain electronic records, and you can typically access your case file through the court's online system. But many institutions — SSA, DLD, county recorders — require the physical certified copy with the clerk's original certification stamp. Digital access is a good backup, not a replacement.
